Sculpture
On A Scale From 1 - 10
This kinetic sculpture is made of ten women's work gloves, sewn and adorned with jewelry, suspended in continuous motion. As the hands flex and fold, they repeatedly form the middle-finger gesture, creating a rhythmic and unrelenting act of defiance.
Moving together as a collective, the hands appear to bow toward one another while simultaneously directing their gestures outward, suggesting a community built on mutual recognition, solidarity, and support. The juxtaposition of work gloves and jewelry merges symbols of domestic labour, care, adornment, and femininity, challenging expectations that women remain polite, accommodating, and agreeable.
Through repetition and movement, an often dismissed gesture becomes a collective act of refusal, asserting the presence, agency, and power of female bodies historically expected to remain silent.
